Men and women have certain roles that they are expected to play. They fear the unknown and those who are different. The characters are expected to be perfect puritans. In both novels the ideas of individuality and conformity are prevalent through the attitude and actions of the characters and how they adapt into the situation that they are placed in. He decided to write about the way that a historical event had caused many people to react in irrational ways due to mass hysteria of the Salem Witch Trials which he saw was reflected in the people of his time. While Huxley decided to choose this manner to express his ideas of his time, Miller decided to use a more historical and concrete approach to the issues that he was witnessing. While Huxley’s novel was a creation of his fantasy it did reflect the behavior and attitude of the people in this era. These authors display these ideas in two different fashions as Huxley takes a satirical approach by creating a society that mocks the people of their time using fictional creations in a fictional dystopia. In certain situations, some characters will display a sense of individuality whereas others are not as brave and will adhere to the masses by following the principles of conformity.
